What VWAP measures
Unlike a simple price average, VWAP gives greater influence to price levels where more volume traded.
Standard session VWAP normally resets when a new trading session begins according to the chart or venue configuration.
Conceptual calculation
VWAP is calculated by accumulating price multiplied by volume and dividing by cumulative volume over the selected period.
Price relative to VWAP
Price above VWAP means the current market is trading above the volume-weighted average for the calculation period; below VWAP means it is trading below that average.
Distance from VWAP can help describe extension, but being far from VWAP does not require price to mean-revert.
VWAP in 24/7 crypto markets
Crypto trades continuously, so the chosen session boundary matters. A daily VWAP still requires a defined daily reset even though the market itself does not close.
Common VWAP mistakes
Assuming VWAP must be revisited
Price can remain on one side of VWAP during strong directional markets.
Ignoring the reset
Different session boundaries can produce different VWAP values.
Treating VWAP as a standalone signal
It describes the relationship between current price and a volume-weighted reference.
VWAP depends on where accumulation begins
VWAP is cumulative over its selected calculation period. Changing the starting point changes which trades contribute to the calculation and can therefore produce a different VWAP value.
Traditional session VWAP commonly resets at the beginning of a trading session. Because crypto trades continuously, a platform must choose a session boundary or another anchoring convention.
VWAP bands add distance context
Some charting tools display bands around VWAP using standard deviation or another distance calculation. These bands describe how far price is trading from the selected VWAP under that implementation.
A move into an outer band is not automatically overbought, oversold or due to reverse. Strong directional markets can remain displaced from VWAP for extended periods.
VWAP as a benchmark versus VWAP as a signal
VWAP can be used as an execution benchmark to compare achieved prices with a volume-weighted market reference. Traders also use it as contextual chart information.
Those are different applications. Price being above or below VWAP describes its relationship to the selected benchmark; it does not by itself establish future direction.
Two crypto charts can show different VWAP values if they use different reset times, anchors, markets or underlying volume feeds.
Key takeaways
- VWAP weights price by traded volume.
- Standard VWAP is calculated over a defined session or period.
- Price above or below VWAP describes location relative to the weighted average.
- VWAP distance can describe extension but does not guarantee mean reversion.
